The British Empire installed an oppressive system that placed the British over the Indian natives. This reconstruction of India by the British imperialists shapes the character of Captain Nemo. Nemo, who holds a deep hatred towards oppression and domination, is a product of British colonial expansion. His antagonistic view towards the British Empire is evident as he retreats into the sea, where he adheres only to his own laws.
